‘End of virginity’ if women drive, Saudi cleric warns

A report in Saudi Arabia has warned that if Saudi women were given the right to drive, it would spell the end of virginity in the country.

Anger over Norwich topless barbers plan

A plan to open a barbers with topless staff in Norwich is facing opposition. Gary Thompson, of GT barbers near Qube, said: “I think it’s an absolutely ludicrous idea and I’ve been speaking to the hairdressing industry here in Norwich and everyone thinks it’s ludicrous and hopes it doesn’t get the go ahead. I think it’s a gimmick – I can’t see the connection between barbering and nudity.” An anonymous objection submitted to the council states: “I believe it will cater to society’s lowest common denominator. I believe that any women working there will be at risk from some customers who will infer that they are up for anything. Norwich people should not have to put up with constant erosion of standards of public decency.”

Swiss ski resorts hit by drought

The traditional start of Switzerland’s ski season has been marred by a shortage of snow across the Alps. The autumn has been the driest on record in the country. Holiday maker, Terrald Gilham said “I thought they’d be snow, but there isn’t any. I guess we’ll have to do something else because we can’t ski without snow”

Action Comics No. 1 sells for record $2.16m

A rare copy of the first issue of Action Comics, famed for the first appearance of Superman, has been sold for a record $2.16 million (£1.4m). An (astute) observer of the auction said “That’s a lot of money for a comic”

Spanish prostitutes ordered to wear reflective vests for their own safety

Prostitutes working on the street outside a town northern Spain have been ordered to wear reflective vests to make them visible to passing traffic and reduce the risk of accidents. A spokesman for the regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra said: “In the past couple of months the prostitutes have been fined for two reasons: for not wearing the reflective jacket and for creating danger on the public highway.”
